CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT

“You can’t help yourself, can you, sir?” DS Skinner said.

Skinner and O’Reilly had just walked through the doors at the station.

“You weren’t too keen on those two builders,” Skinner added.

“I don’t trust builders, Will, and those two layabouts just proved my point. I couldn’t give a monkey’s arse about people’s tax issues – that’s the Inland Revenue’s problem, I just get a bit hacked-off when I come across liars. It’s one of my pet hates.”

DC Owen walked over to them. “The records are in, sir. Uniform has already made a start and DCI Fish has scheduled a briefing for twelve.”

O’Reilly raised an eyebrow. “Has DCI Fish taken over the investigation?”

“Not at all,” DC Owen said. “The DCI seems to know his place but you weren’t answering your phone so the Super urged him to take the initiative.”

“Poor bastard,” O’Reilly looked at his watch. It was half-eleven. “He’s going to regret marrying Superintendent Hayes somewhere along the line. I’ve got something new we need to look at in the briefing. I’m off to grab a quick bite to eat and a cup of tea.”

He went back outside into the late-morning grey. The clouds were a strange colour now and O’Reilly shivered as he looked skyward. He was used to the inky murk of Dublin in the winter but this was something totally new. He wondered if it actually was going to snow on Christmas Day then pushed the thought aside. It really didn’t matter one way or the other what the weather decided to do – Christmas Day was going to be like any other for the officers in the Island Police. Four men were dead and O’Reilly had no more answers than he did at the very start.

He was glad of the warmth of the café around the corner from the station. He’d come to like it here – the sandwiches on offer were unpretentious and the tea they served was as close to the way he liked it as anyone could make it. He took a seat next to the window and waited for someone to come and take his order. There were only a few other tables occupied. This was O’Reilly’s first taste of winter in Guernsey. In March he will have been on the island for a year and experienced all four seasons. Time had flown by. He’d met a woman he could see a future with and he’d watched with a smile on his face as his daughter had settled in alongside him. He’d even acquired a cat somewhere along the way.

A waiter appeared and O’Reilly ordered a ham and cheese sandwich and a pot of tea. He was told it would be ready in five minutes. He gazed out of the window while he waited. The streets were deserted. There were very few tourists on the island at this time of year and the locals were clearly finishing off their last-minute Christmas preparations. O’Reilly remembered he hadn’t done any Christmas shopping. He didn’t have much to buy but he needed to get something for the two ladies in his life.
